Home Depot Fulfillment Center

Road Improvement, ODOT funding, Section 629 Funding, Project Facilitation

October and December 2014

Project Overview

The Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retail chain, worked closely with the Wood County Economic Development Commission and Wood County Port Authority to build a 1.6 million square foot distribution center. This state-of-the-art distribution center is on a 157-acre site in Troy Township off of Pemberville Road south of US 20 in northern Wood County.

The Home Depot was founded in 1978 as a hardware store and now is in more than 2,200 stores across North America. The company aims to help customers, associates, shareholders, and communities like they have for Wood County, Ohio. This partnership not only helped the people of Troy Township, but surrounding communities as well. The building is considered a Direct Fulfillment Center meaning it has the capacity to store and ship items that are only ordered online, not items that are stocked in stores. Construction of this massive facility began in August 2013 and finished March 2014. If 1.6 million square feet doesn’t sound big enough, the facility could hold 13 Home Depot Stores inside and it is about 2 miles to walk around the facility. This Wood County facility was dubbed the largest distribution in The Home Depot supply chain.

The Wood County Economic Development Commission and the Wood County Port Authority worked with Seefried Properties and The Home Depot to locate this 1.6 million square foot direct fulfillment center in Wood County, Ohio.  The total investment in this project exceeded over $130 million.   Wood County Port Authority’s mission is to promote job growth and the goal was met with this project as it created over 700 jobs.  A critical part of this project was the location of the fulfillment center near the intersection of Interstates 280 and 80/90.  Creating the access road, later to become Eastwood Drive, to the facility was a critical component in completing this project.  The Wood County Port Authority worked at sourcing the funds through a ‘629’ fund grant from the Ohio Development and Services Agency, along with a large grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation Jobs and Commerce Grant.  These two grants along with Corporate funding allowed the $2,140,000 project to be completed on time and within the projected budget.
